Root Canal (Endodontics) A root canal filling, or endodontic treatment of a tooth, is the process of removing the nerves from the interior of a tooth and filling the void that is created. A root canal filling is necessary to save a tooth and are used when a tooth becomes infected because of a traumatic injury, when the nerve has become infected because of decay, or when the nerve dies because of repeated or large fillings placed on the tooth. Cracked teeth often need root canal fillings, too.
A tooth may be painful or completely symptom free when it needs a root canal filling. Modern techniques using rotary instrumentation have made root canal fillings easier, faster and more successful than in years past. |
